Who is Shahnaj Husne Jahan?
Dr. Shahnaj Husne Jahan is a professor of archaeology, founder director of the Center for Archaeological Studies and the head of the Department of General Education at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB).
She is involved in teaching and research in South and Southeast Asian archaeology, community archaeology, Buddhist art and archaeology, Islamic art and archaeology, South Asian art and architecture, urbanization and ancient cities, maritime archaeology, Indian ocean trade, cultural heritage management, community based sustainable archaeo-tourism, heritage policy and law. She is a lawyer at Dhaka BAR Association. She is also a founder trustee and director of the Centre for Heritage Studies (CenHerst).
She completed MA in Islamic Art and Archaeology from the Department of Islamic History & Culture, University of Dhaka in 1991 by securing 1st Class 1st position in the combined merit list and also earned the distinction of scoring record marks. She completed her MPhil degree in 1997 and PhD in 2004 from the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology, Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Pune, India.
She is the author of 4 books; 32 book chapters; 35 articles; 16 encyclopedic entries; 3 book reviews; 18 public outreach publications and the editor of 2 books. She is a life member of numerous historical and archaeological societies at home and abroad.
She has participated at several archaeological excavations in India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Besides, she has explored in Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia. Currently she is the project director of the Bhitargarh archaeological site in Bangladesh, where she has developed various strategies to stimulate public interest in heritage preservation and management as well as for socio-economic development of the local community. She is regularly organizing heritage festival, seminar, webinar, conference, workshop, discussion forum and training program for preserving, promoting and managing cultural heritage of South and Southeast Asia.
She received “Anannya Top Ten” award, ‘Asia Fellow Award’ and ‘Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque Smriti Padak-2014’.
