Professor, Dept. of Architecture and Planning, UGM & Vice-Minister of Education and Culture for Cultural Affairs, Ministry of Education, Republic of Indonesia (2011-2014)

With a professional background in architecture and urban planning, Prof. Wiendu Nuryanti is recognized as being a prominent expert on culture, tourism and development issues in Indonesia, including Women in Tourism. She served as Vice-Minister of Education and Culture for Cultural Affairs for the Republic of Indonesia (2011-2014). As a result of her outstanding service, Dr. Nuryanti was awarded the Bintang Mahaputra (Medal for Outstanding Service to the Nation).

In 2007, Dr. Nuryanti was appointed a full Professor of Architecture and Tourism Planning in the Dept. of Architecture and Planning at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia’s largest and oldest university. She first did her undergraduate work at UGM, obtaining a degree in architecture and urban planning. Dr. Nuryanti then went on scholarship to study in the USA where she received her Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin (1987). She then won scholarships from Princeton University and Kansas State University to follow a European study program with the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris which included an intensive six-month International Program on Architecture and Museum Development, as well as Island Tourism based in Epidaurus, Greece. In 1998, Dr. Nuryanti obtained her Ph.D. in Tourism Planning and Regional Development from the Universities of Surrey and Bournemouth in the UK.

Prof. Nuryanti is also a Founder in 1986 and Executive Director of an NGO Stuppa Indonesia: Partners in Development. Stuppa Indonesia has worked for many years in the fields of tourism, culture and development and was officially recognized –by UNESCO as an Indonesian Partner NGO in 2022. Prof. Nuryanti has been for many years a senior consultant on culture, tourism and women empowerment policies. Prof. Nuryanti also served for two years as a Director on the Governing Board of ICHCAP, the UNESCO organization charged with protecting and revitalizing Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in the Asia Pacific region which is headquartered in Jeonju, South Korea. In 2021, she was appointed as an Official Juror in the New Capital of Indonesia Design Commission charged with the design of the planned new Indonesian capital IKN (“Nusantara”).
