1. Introduction

Assam is one of the most scenic and biodiverse tourist destinations in India, with its rich cultural heritage (Chaudhury, Sarkar &Pattnaik 2023). Tourism contributes to the economy of the state by providing employment, supporting small businesses, fostering investment and development in the region through boosts to the tourism dollar and developments in infrastructure.

2. Tourism and Economic Development in Assam

Assam has emerged as a vital driver of economic development with a wide variety of tourist offers and a rising number of visitors, particularly through tourism and cultural programmes. The two UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park are the centre points of wildlife tourism. In 2025-26, Kaziranga experienced a significant rise in tourist numbers to 4.68 lakh, a leap from the 4.06 lakh recorded in 2024-25 (Kaziranga National Park, 2026). International visitors also rose from 17,693 to 30,474 in one year. Likewise, Manas National Park earned ₹1.73 crore revenue from tourism in 2024-25, enticing 60,921 Indian tourists and 3,426 foreign visitors (Kaziranga National Park, 2026). The sites are important for providing jobs in the hospitality services, as well as transport and guiding, and income for conservation activities.

The state economy is also boosted by religious tours and river tours. Kamakhya Temple is one of the temples that contribute to modern India. In 2024, the AmbubachiMela saw an attendance of over 7 lakh pilgrims and is estimated to have about 8 lakh devotees in 2025 (BNE, 2025). This also led to high demand for accommodation, transport, food service and local vendors for the organisers. Brahmaputra River tourism has grown with the number of cruise ships increasing from 3 in 2013-2014 to 25 by 2025 (TTW, 2025). Due to the completion of steel gangway tourist jetties at Pandu and Bogibeel in 2025, accessibility and tourism in the area have improved further.Handicraft industry, local markets, transport operators, hotels, and restaurants are also benefiting from the increased demand for Assamese silk, bamboo crafts, and terracotta products in these industries due to tourism (Mazumdar, 2025).

The tourism sector has been assisted by government policy, which has heavily invested in tourism promotion and infrastructure. Advantage Assam 2.0 fetched investment proposals of ₹4.91 Lakh Crore, among which the projects in the field of Tourism and Hospitality are very important and extensive (Economic Times, 2025). Besides, ₹4,800 crore has been pledged for waterways development (DD News, 2026). The Ministry of Tourism has also given clearance to various tourism infrastructure projects for better connectivity to destinations like wildlife parks and tea gardens to boost the overall economic development of Assam.

3.   Challenges and Future Opportunities

Assam has seen several challenges in the tourism sector in spite of the contribution made by the sector to the economy. In remote wildlife and rural areas, where connectivity is not yet well-established, it is still a concern in many tourist destinations. Tourist activities are also affected by the Brahmaputra River as it floods in the winter season, ruining infrastructure. For instance, floods in Assam impacted over 5.15 lakh individuals in the state during June 2025 and part of Kaziranga National Park, leading to disruptions in tourism activities and disrupting the movement of wildlife (Down To Earth, 2025).

The trend in tourism is increasing, thereby raising concerns about sustainable tourism. In 2025-26, the highest ever figures of 4.68 lakh came into the Kaziranga National Park, prompting growing concern for the pressure on natural ecosystems and wildlife habitats (Kaziranga National Park, 2026). Hence, policy on responsible tourism, conservation and community involvement is vital to long-term sustainability. However, Assam has tremendous potential for further development of the tourism sector in spite of prevailing challenges. The development of further infrastructure, eco and river tourism, and digital marketing policies can welcome more domestic and foreign visitors. Tourism can complement employment generation and regional development efforts if it is developed in a balanced way with the environment (Shekhar, 2024).

4. Conclusion

Tourism is becoming a key source of livelihood and income generation, infrastructure development, and local development in the State of Assam. This is contributing to the economic growth of the place with significant employment and income generation potential, development of infrastructure and supporting local business. The expansion of wildlife, religious and river tourism showcases the increased potential of the sector to further boost the state economy. Yet, obstacles to connectivity, flooding and environmental sustainability remain to limit long-term growth. For the most benefits from tourism, the concerned Govt., Tourism office and the local community need to work together for the development of the transport system, urgent strengthening of climatic resilience and promotion of Responsible Tourism Practices. Swift action must be taken in the above areas to make tourism a sustainable source of economic development and economic progress for Assam in the longterm.
