Who is Datuk Seri Victor Wee?
Professor Datuk Seri Victor Wee is currently teaching at Taylor’s University in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Food, and Leisure Management and also sits on the International Advisory Board of Asia Pacific Entrepreneur Award.
He started his career at the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department rising to the rank of Senior Macroeconomic Director. During the Asian Financial Crisis 1997-98, he was an economist attached to the National Economic Action Council Working Group tasked with turning around the Malaysian economy caught in a deep recession.
He had previously served as Secretary General of Ministry of Tourism (2004-2008) and Chairman of Tourism Malaysia (2009-2013). He ran Malaysia’s most successful tourism campaign, Visit Malaysia Year 2007, and led the formulation of Malaysia’s tourism transformational program for 2010-2020 under PEMANDU.
At the international level, he chaired the Programme and Budget Committee at the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) during 2008-2013 and had gone on consultancy assignments for UNWTO and ASEAN tourism. He was the lead consultant to formulate the ASEAN Social and Cultural Community (ASCC) Blueprint 2025 and a member of the high-level international team to formulate the ASEAN Blueprint 2025. He is currently Secretary General of the ASEAN Tourism Research Association (ATRA).
He is currently the President of Buddhist Gem Fellowship Malaysia as well as Secretary of the International Buddhist Confederation based in New Delhi.
He holds a Bachelor degree in Economics from University of Malaya, Master of Arts from Brown University, U.S.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Bristol University, United Kingdom.
